DEXA is considered the clinical gold standard for body composition, accurate to within ±1% for fat and lean mass. Bioimpedance devices (InBody, smart scales) can be off by 5 to 10% because they estimate composition from water content, which fluctuates with hydration, food and time of day.
Yes. The radiation dose from a full DEXA scan is roughly 0.1 microsieverts, around 40 to 70 times less than the natural background radiation you'd absorb on any given day, and a tiny fraction of a standard chest X-ray. Not recommended only if you are or may be pregnant.
Gym gear with no metal. Leggings or shorts and a t-shirt are perfect. Remove your watch, jewellery and anything in pockets. You stay fully clothed throughout.
For active training or nutrition changes, every 3 to 6 months is the sweet spot. Less than 3 months and changes are hard to see clearly above day-to-day noise. For general longevity tracking, every 6 to 12 months is plenty.
